T&T Supermarket
Of all the places we went during our multicultural day, we felt the most out of place in T&T Supermarket. We never encountered even one other white person. Dustin says that he has probably never had another experience where he was so much in the minority. Perhaps this is how a Chinese immigrant might feel the first time they walk into an almost exclusively Caucasian Sunday morning church service.
While in the market we found the egg section. At first we assumed these must be some sort of chicken eggs, but this was not the case. The smaller ones are quail eggs, while the purple ones are duck eggs. These eggs are a normal part of some people's food habits, just as beef is an everyday food for the average Albertan.
This is a photo of what we assume is a normal vegetable. The price is somewhat similar to what a tomato would be at Safeway. Although we don't know what opo is exactly, it looked similar to a cucumber. It appears that Asian culture has many different vegetables which they consider normal and which are a part of their every day lives.
Finding unusual things was a common story as we explored the market. Aloe vera soda and bright pink eggs were just a few of the strange foods that we encountered. This was encouraging to me since I have often assumed that a person who has come to Canada from another country might have difficulty finding some of the more unusual ingredients needed for some of their meals. This experience demonstrated that many of these are actually available in abundance. We also saw a few things that we might like to try some time. We even found a couple items that Dustin's grandma used to bring back from the Philippines when he was younger!
